Records of Scores

September 12, 1981

I am wondering whether games cease to benefit the individual as soon as a record is made of a score at the end of a game.  When records are established, attention immediately focuses on the team, its accomplishments, its glory, etc., rather than on the fun and exercise which the individuals playing are receiving as their benefit.  The individual then evaluates the merit of his efforts relative to the glory of the team, rather than to the benefit to himself.  He would think that it would be better to suffer in agony if a team is gaining a record, than to enjoy sporting and invigorating participation in an unknown team.  How stupid!
